About Waterbury, CT

The original settlement of Waterbury was in 1674 from the Town Plot section. King Philip's War caused it to be vacated and the name was changed into the Western region of the Green in 1677. The both sites are marked. The Algonquin name for the region has been"Matetacoke" meaning"area without trees" It seemed as"Mattatock" in 1673, and"Mattatuck" at the General Court record of May 18, 1674.

The name changed to Waterbury on May 15, 1686, once the settlement was declared as the 28th city in the Connecticut colony. It then included all or parts of the later city of Watertown, Plymouth, Wolcott, Prospect, Naugatuck, Thomaston and Middlebury. The name Waterbury was selected due to all of the streams flowing into the Naugatuck River.
